'Avatar’ Box Office Run Ends With 'Dear John'

in
After spending seven weekends at the top spot of the box office, “Avatar” was dethroned this past weekend by the romantic comedy “Dear John”

While James Cameron’s latest smash hit at the box office managed to break most of the meaningful records that were established by Titanic, it came nowhere close to matching its long-running threshold atop the box office.

Avatar was dethroned by a film that had a measly production budget of just $25 million over the weekend, which effectively snapped the film’s impressive seven-weekend streak as the number one film at the box office.

Romantic comedy Dear John, which stars Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum, grossed $32.4 million over the weekend to claim to the top spot while Avatar dropped to second with $23.6 million in its eighth weekend at the box office, according to MTV.com.

Dear John wasn’t expected to have nearly this much success in its opening weekend since Screen Gems revealed that they had been hoping for approximately a $20 million intake.

Cameron’s Titanic managed to hold on to the top spot at box offices for a staggering 17 consecutive weekends but the overall box office results for Avatar have been nothing short of astonishing.

After Dear John and Avatar, no other film managed to generate more than $10 million over the weekend. From Paris With Love and Edge of Darkness grossed $8.1 million and $7 million respectively in their debut weekends while Tooth Fairy rounded out the top five with $6.5 million.

Did They Make Enough?

Although Avatar dropped in the box office for the first time, I would not doubt to see the film stay in the $20 million rage for a couple more weekends and rise back on top. Another point is that since the director and production team spent so much money on Avatar they better hope the money continues to roll in order to make some money. Way to take the next step in the film industry and glad to see it has been paying off.
